We have been focusing on how learning is changing in response to Millennial needs, attitudes and philosophies as it relates to Web 2.0. However, the changes to how we learn are reflected in the work place. Chuck Blakeman discusses the impact of this paradigm shift in his article Employees Will Hate Where the Work World is Going. He discusses four workplace trends, two of which we have discussed--crowdsourcing and employee-led innovation. (The latter involves treating individuals as stakeholders in the process, rather than children told what to do.) Two other concepts I find interesting that may help instructional developers are the idea that productivity is measured in outputs instead of time, and that values are used instead of rules. In preparing students to enter the workforce, I think academia should be aware of these changes and seek to address them fully in their instructional models.

Work World Mirroring Academia
